Fall is in the air, and there’s no better way to welcome the season than with a cozy, creative craft that you can enjoy with friends and family. One of my favorite projects to embrace the beauty of autumn is a DIY Pumpkin Moss Wreath. Not only does it add a gorgeous natural element to your home, but it’s also a fun and easy way to bond with loved ones. In fact, I made this wreath with my mom on our front veranda, and it was such a lovely way to spend a crisp fall afternoon!
In this blog post, I'll guide you step-by-step on how to make your very own Pumpkin Moss Wreath. Trust me, this is the perfect fall activity to do with friends or family, and you’ll be amazed at how beautiful and simple it is to create.
Keep in mind that you can make this as a centrepiece or hang it as an actual wreath! I walked around my backyard and picked a bunch of red and orange coloured foliage, some pink hydrangea flowers. Really this is totally up to you! Let your creativity guide you.
What You'll Need:
Preserved Coloured Reindeer Moss
Dried Flowers such as Hydrangea, Baby's Breath, Leaves
Scissors/Shears
Hot Glue Gun
Ribbon for hanging or wrapping
Pumpkin
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare Your Wreath Frame
Start by laying your foam wreath on a flat surface. If you're using moss sheets, cut them into sections that will cover the frame. If you're using loose moss, get ready to attach it in small clumps.
Tip: It’s easier to work on a flat, sturdy surface like your front veranda or a large table, just as my mom and I did. This keeps the craft neat and organized, while enjoying the beautiful fall weather outdoors.
2. Attach the Moss to the Frame
Using florist wire or a hot glue gun, start securing the moss to the wreath frame. Cover the entire frame with moss until it’s thick and lush. If using florist wire, wrap it around the moss and the frame several times to hold it securely in place.
Pro Tip: I found that working with moss was incredibly simple, especially when we took turns. My mom secured the moss, while I shaped it to give the wreath a full, natural look. It’s a great way to collaborate on the project!
3. Add Your Pumpkin
Once the moss is attached, it’s time to add your pumpkins. Use a small foam or real pumpkin to place in the middle of your centerpiece. If doing a hanging wreath, you can also hot glue or wire smaller pumpkins directly to the moss.
Arrange the pumpkins in clusters or evenly around the wreath—whatever looks best to you!
4. Personalize with Fall Embellishments
Now that your pumpkin is in place, you can add other fall-themed embellishments like pinecones, acorns, or dried leaves. I picked some fresh hydrangeas that will dry nicely, and filled them in all along the sides of my pumpkin in an arrangement. Feel free to get creative here! My mom and I added some dried babies breath I had from an old bouquet, as well as some coloured reindeer moss for a pop of added colour.
5. Attach a Hanging Ribbon or Twine (Wreath)
To finish your wreath, tie a piece of twine or ribbon to the top of the frame so you can hang it. We opted for a simple, rustic twine, which added to the natural look of the wreath and tied in perfectly with the fall theme.
6. Hang or Place and Admire
Your Pumpkin Moss Wreath / Centerpiece is now ready to enjoy! Whether you choose to place it on your front door, a wall, or even as a table centerpiece, this craft will bring a touch of autumn to any space. My mom and I loved how it looked on our front veranda—every time I see it, I’m reminded of the lovely afternoon we spent together making it.
